Smart Insulin Pens are shining a spotlight on MDI Therapy, revealing gaps in care but also tremendous opportunities to optimize care for this population. For the first time, we are able to build a data-driven practice approach for insulin injection therapy patients.
While insulin delivery based on carbohydrate counting is the gold standard for type 1 diabetes, it is difficult for many patients with type 1 or type 2 diabetes. Recently Companion Medical released two new InPen dose calculator modes in addition to the Carbohydrate Counting Mode: Meal Estimation Mode and Fixed Dose Mode. In all cases, the dose calculator keeps track of and accounts for active insulin from previous doses in dose recommendation allowing patients across the full MDI spectrum for the first time to safely deliver correction doses.
