The InPen System was designed to provide the benefits of insulin pump therapy to patients who cannot or will not use an insulin pump. It includes a dose calculator, dose reminders, and display of active insulin. The InPen System is designed for U-100 Humalog® or Novolog® insulin.
InPen automatically tracks insulin therapy, reports last dose and active insulin, and helps people with diabetes calculate mealtime and correction doses. This eases the burden of memorizing doses and improves the reliability of the insulin logbook.
Only about one third of people who take insulin are able to calculate a simple meal dose (meaning one with no insulin on board) and nearly 60 percent of insulin doses are taken with some insulin on board.1-3 The use of an automated dose calculator is associated with a 0.7 to 1.0 percent reduction in A1c. 4-8
As the health care provider, you determine the carbohydrate factor, correction factor, duration of insulin action, and target blood glucose at therapy start. The human factors studies we’ve conducted indicate that patients are able to easily enter these variables into the InPen system and use them to successfully calculate dosages.
The dose calculator automatically captures insulin on board and factors it into calculations. This helps to eliminate insulin stacking which can lead to hypoglycemia. InPen automatically differentiates between prime and therapy doses so the insulin on board calculation is always accurate.
In addition to the dose calculator, the InPen system includes optional dose reminders, reminders to check blood glucose after dosing, and temperature and age alerts for insulin. These alerts and reminders make it easier for your patient to better adhere to their insulin therapy.
With insulin data on the smartphone, reports are intuitive and straightforward and give you a clear picture of how your patient has been managing their therapy. For charting you can generate a PDF that can be emailed right from your patient’s phone. Follow-ups are actionable and productive with complete data to inform your patient’s care.
